The Psychology of the Long Game

The person who sets the twenty year plan is never the person who has to live it.

The Psychology of the Long Game
मनन

I have made many twenty year plans. Most of them died in year two. Not because the world changed, though it did, but because I changed. The man who wrote the plan wanted things the later man stopped wanting. We call this a failure of discipline. It is nothing of the kind. It is the ordinary fact that you are not one person over time. You are a relay of strangers, each handing the baton to someone slightly different.

Once you see this, the usual advice curdles. Set a goal and commit. Commit whom. The self who commits has no authority over the self who wakes up eight years later with different appetites. A promise made across that gap is not a contract. It is a hope addressed to a stranger.

Why willpower is the wrong lever

Willpower assumes a single continuous self grinding toward a fixed point. But the long game is not won by force. It is won by making the path so obvious that each future self, whoever he turns out to be, finds it easier to continue than to quit. You are not motivating yourself. You are leaving good instructions for the people you will become.

This is why systems beat resolutions. A resolution is a demand on the next self. A system is a gift to him. One says you must. The other says here, I made this easy for you.

Design for the next self

So I plan differently now. I ask not what do I want in twenty years, but what will the man in five years thank me for having started, whatever he ends up wanting. The answers come out quieter. Health. Skills that compound. Relationships kept warm. Money that works without attention. These survive changes of taste because almost every future self can use them.

The durable goal is the one built to survive its own author. It does not need you to stay the same person. It needs you to have been kind, once, to the strangers coming after you.

I will not be who I am now in twenty years. That used to frighten me. Now it is the whole design brief.
